What is therapeutic fasting according to Buchinger?
This method dates back to Dr Otto Buchinger (1878–1966). He experienced first-hand the health benefits of conscious abstinence from eating. During the fast, around 250 kilocalories are consumed daily in the form of herbal teas, vegetable broths, fruit and vegetable juices, and water. This relieves the digestive system while the body enters an active metabolic state. Rather than coming from food, the body's energy now comes from its own reserves: fat deposits and stored sugar are mobilised.
What effect does the therapy have?
During fasting, the body detoxifies and deacidifies itself, reducing inflammatory processes and purifying tissue through autophagy. As a result, the body loses 300–500 g of weight per day. Chronic illnesses and pain are alleviated, and blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels are reduced.
Therapeutic fasting is a suitable preventative measure and an effective way to introduce a change in diet. It relieves excess weight, stress and body toxins. It clears the mind and promotes self-healing powers.

Frequently asked questions about fasting
Which form of fasting do we offer?
At Menschels Vitalresort, we offer therapeutic fasting using the Buchinger method, which we believe to be highly effective.
After just a short time, the body adapts to the new metabolic state, providing long-term benefits for a better quality of life.
What do you eat when you're fasting?
Even when fasting, we still meet for 'meals', but we deliberately refrain from eating solid food or drinking beverages for a limited period of time. During this time, we consume freshly squeezed fruit juices, vegetable broths, herbal teas and mineral water (providing 250 calories), which provide the body with vitamins and minerals. According to individual requirements and medical prescription, honey, milk or soy products, vitamins, minerals or trace elements may be added.
In the case of prolonged fasting or as required by a doctor, the fasting diet is modified or supplemented (e.g. with protein in the form of skimmed milk or soy products).
How long should you fast for?
Preventive fasting has a noticeable positive effect on the body after just 10 days (7–8 days of fasting followed by a few days of reintroduction).
For therapeutic fasting, we recommend a minimum of two weeks, or ideally three, to achieve lasting health improvements. To make it easier to start fasting and intensify its vital effects, you can give yourself two days of relief at home with fruit, rice or raw food immediately before the start of your fasting days.

Fasting successes
Therapeutic fasting has a positive effect on chronic diseases.
The body feeds on its own deposits - primarily from adipose tissue. The tissues are thoroughly purified and regenerated, excess pounds are lost (300 to 500 g daily), and a pleasant distance from everyday life is created.
Intestinal care and herbal packs on the liver promote elimination and detoxification. Daily physical exercise stimulates metabolism, strengthens your cardiovascular system and prevents muscle loss during fasting days.
Fasting has been shown to prevent new cases of vascular disease, high blood pressure, gastrointestinal complaints, allergies, metabolic disorders and rheumatic diseases. Fasting is a holistic concept that also includes spiritual and emotional aspects.
At Menschels Vitalresort, (therapeutic) fasting takes place under supervision and regular medical advice. By switching to the “internal” diet, you lose excess pounds and, after feeling good, return to work, leisure and family with the effect of being reborn.
However, as with no other therapy, the success of fasting also depends on one's own positive inner attitude, will and honesty
How is the weight loss during fasting?
Buchinger's therapeutic fasting is not focused on weight loss; this is an added bonus. On average, weight loss is 300–500 g per day, depending on factors such as physical activity, age, and basal metabolic rate. In the first few days of fasting, weight loss is usually higher due to the excretion of water.
At least one hour of physical activity per day significantly enhances the effects of fasting: the excretory organs are stimulated and the body becomes less acidic through increased respiration, blood flow and perspiration. Additionally, exercise protects muscle mass and significantly increases metabolic turnover.
At the beginning and end of fasting therapy, Dr. Menschel's medical practice measures body composition in terms of body fat, muscle and connective tissue mass.
During the fasting period, the health resort regularly monitors and records weight, blood pressure and pulse rates. This weight chart is ideal for maintaining progress at home.
