Pastor Emanuel Felke: Ideas that still resonate today

16 August 2026 marks the 100th anniversary of Pastor Emanuel Felke’s death. His belief that health stems from a combination of natural elements, including movement, nutrition, water, light, air and healing clay, continues to influence Menschels Vitalresort to this day.

In memory of Pastor Emanuel Felke

As a naturopath and the founder of Felke therapy, Pastor Emanuel Felke made an indelible mark on the town of Bad Sobernheim. The town is still known as the 'Felke City' today, and is commemorating its honorary citizen throughout this anniversary year with a variety of events.

Born in 1856, Pastor Felke made a name for himself far beyond church circles as a Protestant pastor. His observations and experiences led him to develop a natural healing method combining the four elements: light, air, water and healing clay. The press later dubbed him the 'Clay Pastor'. Felke is also considered the founder of complex homeopathy, in which several homeopathic remedies are combined into a single formula.

He developed his health philosophy at a time when medication and technical diagnostic options were still limited. Rather than treating individual ailments, he viewed the human being as a whole. He placed particular importance on healing clay. Clay baths and packs were as much a part of his therapy as air and sun bathing, water treatments and outdoor exercise. This concept was complemented by a simple, natural diet and a structured daily routine.

His goal was not to treat individual symptoms in the short term. Rather, he aimed to strengthen the body's natural regulatory and self-healing powers, encouraging people to adopt a healthier lifestyle. His healing methods were, in many ways, ahead of their time. Many of his core ideas can be found in preventive medicine and naturopathy today.

From Pastor Felke to Menschels

The fact that Felke therapy is still practised at the Menschels Vitalresort today is closely linked to our family's history. Alfons Menschel met Pastor Emanuel Felke in person and was so convinced by his natural healing methods that he initially assisted him during consultations. In 1928, Alfons and Johanna Menschel founded the "Felke-Jungborn Menschel", laying the foundation for our current health resort.

His teaching methods have been an integral part of our health concept for nearly a century. While much has evolved, the core idea remains the same: Health is not created by a single measure, but by the interplay of natural stimuli. This principle is particularly evident in our coordinated treatments.

To this day, healing clay remains at the heart of Felke therapy. Clay baths and packs utilise the natural properties of clay. Depending on the desired effect, it is applied warm or cool to stimulate the skin, muscles and circulation. These treatments are primarily used to promote blood circulation, boost the immune system and treat musculoskeletal issues. Clay also has detoxifying and anti-inflammatory properties.

For Felke, daily exercise was second nature. Walks, gymnastics and outdoor physical activity were essential aspects of a healthy lifestyle for him. It is now widely recognised that regular exercise strengthens the cardiovascular system, boosts metabolism and improves mental well-being. Even a daily walk can help to clear your head and recharge your batteries.

What many people don't know is that: Conscious breathing was also part of the original Felke therapy. Felke referred to this as "air bathing for the lungs" and recommended spending as much time as possible in fresh air, becoming consciously aware of one's own breathing. Since then, it has been proven that deep, slow breathing has a positive effect on the autonomic nervous system, lowering pulse, blood pressure and muscle tension.

His nutritional recommendations also seem surprisingly modern. Felke advocated a diet that was as natural, plant-based and easy to digest as possible. These views are supported by current findings on gut health, metabolism, and the importance of a balanced diet.

The concept also encompasses water treatments, light therapy and nature therapy. Through sitz baths and sun and air baths, the body receives stimuli that activate and strengthen its natural regulatory mechanisms.

A legacy that lives on

When Alfons and Johanna Menschel founded the “Felke-Jungborn Menschel” about a hundred years ago, they adopted the individual treatment methods and continued a health philosophy that views the person as a whole.

To this day, we are guided by the fundamental principles of Felke therapy. We combine this naturopathic heritage with modern medicine, therapeutic experience and current scientific findings.
