Wine from our region: Scharlachberg Riesling 2024
The Nahe Valley and the neighbouring region of Rheinhessen are renowned for their remarkable variety of wines and historic vineyards. The wines of these two regions are shaped by diverse soils, climatic conditions and the expertise of the winemakers. In our blog, we will regularly introduce selected wines that you can also find on our wine list. First up is the 2024 Scharlachberg Riesling Grosses Gewächs from the Kruger-Rumpf winery. What defines its origin, what aromas characterise it, and with which dishes does it pair best?

The Binger Scharlachberg
A vineyard with history
The Scharlachberg has a long viticultural tradition. The site was first documented in 1248. In the 19th century, the Rieslings produced here had an excellent reputation that extended far beyond Germany's borders.
A notable feature is the reddish-coloured soil that gives the vineyard its name. The steep, predominantly south-facing vineyards are characterised by iron-rich slate, weathered rock and quartzite. The favourable sun exposure and drying winds from the Hunsrück create ideal conditions for the grapes to ripen. Today, the Scharlachberg is one of the "Große Lagen" (great sites) classified by the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates (VDP). Our Riesling from the Kruger-Rumpf winery bears the "VDP.GROSSES GEWÄCHS" designation – an award for top-tier dry wines from these particularly high-quality sites.
A Riesling with character – the 2024 vintage
The 2024 Scharlachberg Riesling from the winery in Münster-Sarmsheim is characterised by a combination of ripe fruit aromas, lively acidity and a fine mineral note. It reveals hints of peach, apricot and red apple on the nose, complemented by fresh grapefruit notes.
On the palate, it is powerful yet balanced. The fruit notes are accompanied by a spicy minerality, while the acidity provides freshness and structure. Its long finish rounds off the flavour profile.
The wine is fermented with natural yeasts and then aged in a large, used wooden barrel. This preserves the Riesling's distinct character without allowing pronounced wood aromas to take centre stage.
Food pairing and serving suggestions
Thanks to its fresh acidity, ripe fruit aromas and subtle spice, the 2024 Scharlachberg Riesling is a highly versatile wine to accompany food. It pairs particularly well with fine fish dishes and seafood, as well as aromatic vegetables and light Mediterranean cuisine. It is also delicious when enjoyed on its own.
In our organic vitality kitchen, we prioritise high-quality ingredients that are preferably regional and seasonal, as well as gentle preparation methods. A characterful Riesling like this complements a dish's flavours without overpowering them.
Serve well-chilled at about 10–12 °C (50–54 °F). This allows its fruit aromas and full aromatic complexity to shine.
